Thinking of renovating your home? You might want to consider the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Green Home program for energy-efficient home upgrades. This program can make you eligible for a reimbursed amount equivalent to ten per cent of your Mortgage Loan Insurance premium, as well as an extended amortization (up to a maximum of 30 years) without a premium surcharge.
If you're an existing home owner and were thinking of making energy-efficient home upgrades, here is how the Green Home program works:
1 | Obtain an energy rating for your home. You can contact an NRCan qualified energy advisor to get this rating. The advisor will also give you a list of recommendations on how to improve your rating.
2 | Talk to your lender about which options are available to you.
3 | Improve your rating. Based on your the results of your energy rating and assessment, make the energy-efficient upgrades to your home.
4 | Reap the benefits of lower utility bills and revel in your contribution toward helping the environment.
5 | Obtain an updated rating for your home. After the renovations are done, your energy advisor will re-assess your home. If your home has improved by at least 5 points and the overall score is at least 40, you can apply for the premium refund.
